Dear Everyone:
Yes!!!
We have been getting rain.
You know, that wet stuff that falls out of the sky.
Not as much as Oregon and Washington are blessed with, of course;
but we have had rain, off and on, all day yesterday and today (only 38
days to go).
This presents something of a dilemma for those of
us who have been living through this 5-year-so-far drought:
We’ve forgotten how to remember to carry umbrellas.
This morning, I looked lovingly out the window at
all that beautiful precipitation, then headed out for lunch, only
realizing when I got down to the lobby that it was raining outside and my
umbrella was still up in my office.
And the only reason I even
had an umbrella is because I always carry one in my briefcase.
A rather old, cheap, folding one that won’t open when you’re
outside and doesn’t want to close when you’re inside.
I’m thinking of getting a really
good one this weekend, not
some little $5-$7.00 variety; but one that will really work when I want
it to. The one I have can go
in the closet here for emergencies.
Consider it an offering to the Rain god.
Do you realize that there are small children around
here who have never even seen
rain? “Mommy, your car’s
getting all wet!”
Reminds me of the time when we lived in Castro
Valley and it actually got cold enough to snow.
I don’t think any of us kids had ever seen snow before, but we
knew what we were supposed to do with it:
Build a Snowman, of course.
If I recall correctly, there wasn’t enough of it to even stick on
the ground; so I guess we just drew snowmen in our coloring books.
On my way out to get lunch, once I remembered my
whatchamacallit, I got stopped again, this time by “Public
Manipulation”. They were
handing out “Support Our Troops” pins.
These consist of little Yellow Ribbon lapel pins and little US
Flag pins. I got one of
each.
Actually, I’m late for this.
Everyone else in Records Management has been wearing them for the
past week or so. But I was
out of the office last week because of serving Jury Duty, which I did
almost entirely in my own living room,
definitely the way to do it,
if you have the choice.
Evidently, last week was when “Public Manipulation” first started
handing them out to people as they went through the lobbies of Company
buildings.
I don’t mind the US Flags.
They’re patriotic without being gaudy.
But I have a real problem with those Yellow Ribbons.
EEvery time I see one, that song
Tie A Yellow Ribbon ‘Round the Old Oak Tree starts playing in my
head and it won’t stop. The
only thing I’ve found that will drive it out is Walt Disney’s
It’s a Small, Small World.
This is not, repeat not, an improvement.
Love, as always,
Pete
