Love, As Always, Pete

The Weekly Letters, by A. Pedersen Wood

Dear Everyone:

Well, Donny the Trumpet really did it this time, didn’t he?

The self-proclaimed “Law and Order Candidate”, who immediately after vowing to “protect and uphold the Constitution of the United States of America”, pronounced that there was a “new Sheriff in Town”, took clear and careful aim this week and firmly shot himself in the foot.  Again.

That, of course, was not the idea.  The idea was to “fire up the Base” for the upcoming elections in November.  And nothing “fires up the Base” quite like that good old scapegoat, illegal immigration.

Never mind that illegal immigration has dropped significantly in recent years, or that at its peak, illegals comprised less than 4% of the US population.  Every politician needs a Bogeyman, and undocumented workers is one of Donny’s favorites.

So, a few months ago, he started the Trump Administration Family Separation Policy, which involved separating children from their parents even if said parents were in the process of legally applying for asylum from near-certain death in one of many armed conflicts taking place “South of the Border”.  Lots of horror stories about border patrol agents “tricking” parents into letting them “take the little one to the restroom, be right back…”  Even one claim of a nursing infant being confiscated from the mother who was breastfeeding her at the time.

And there’s the now-famous photo of an adorable two-year-old, in a pretty pink jacket, tears streaming down her face, while her mother is being frisked by an officer.  Never mind that the adorable two-year-old was never actually separated from her mother.  After all, it was such a great shot!

So there’s Donny, screaming “Barbarians at the Gate!”  And there are the hordes of crying children, to the tune of over 2000 that the Department of Homeland Security tossed into the laps of unprepared, much-less-warned, Health and Human Services Department personnel.  Much talk of the “Trump Detention Camps” and vague references to the Nazi Death Camps.  Hardly the same thing, of course, but film of children, literally in cages, doesn’t help Donny’s image right now.

So he tried blaming in all on Congress, of course.  “Only Congress can fix this!”  “It’s all the Democrats fault!”  “There’s nothing I can do about it!”

And more footage of sobbing preschoolers.

Finally, faced with overmounting opposition on all sides, and less than a week since claiming he couldn’t do anything about it, Donny announced that he would do something about it.  And put his seismographic-signature on a hastily-contrived Executive Order, to put a “temporary hold” on his Trump Administration Family Separation Policy.

As for the “misplaced” 2000+ children, that will take much more time to clean up.  I can only imagine how many civil rights lawyers are licking their chops in anticipation of filing lawsuits against the government and its deep pockets.

Does any of this sound familiar?  Remember when Donny suddenly announced that “no Muslims” would be allowed into the United States?  Remember when planes landed and people with perfectly legal visas were turned away because Donny thought it was such a good idea?

That one has been through the courts several times, even up to the Supreme Court, and Donny has lost each and every case, so far.

I don’t have a “bucket list”, but one thing I’d like to do is live long enough to see what future historians make of this Very Special Administration.  Will our (figurative) grandchildren roll on the floor with laughter at what is going on right now?

Love, as always,

Pete
