Love, As Always, Pete

The Weekly Letters, by A. Pedersen Wood

Dear Everyone:

We had a nice spot of rain yesterday, here in drought-ravaged California.  Some places got as much as ten inches, which strikes me as being just a little bit greedy.  The rain has moved on, hopefully to deposit lots of snow in the mountains, since it is that melting snow that actually fills the reservoirs, all of which are currently at “record low” levels.

As I understand it, some of these records go back to before the American Civil War, also known as “The War Between The States”.  Or, as it is called in “Frankie’s” North Carolina neighborhood, “The Unfortunate Incident of the Northern Aggression”.  I guess the bombardment of Fort Sumter by Southern forces, signaling the beginning of said War, sort of slipped their collective minds.

In other news…

Last year (or maybe the year before, I’m not sure) our ARMA Chapter President, “Callie”, excited by her success in passing the Certified Records Manager (CRM) Exam, decided that we should host a CRM Workshop for other aspiring Candidates.  She even talked about scheduling the Workshop near a weekend “for the people who will fly in and want to do some San Francisco sightseeing.”

Personally, I thought she was going a little overboard.  Then she left the Chapter, and left me holding the bag.  We, meaning the Chapter Board, headed by moi, “decided” to postpone the Workshop until after the Holidays.  Which are rapidly approaching.

“Callie” had originally planned to hold the Workshop where she worked, in Vallejo.  Then she changed that to Walnut Creek, since she had an “in” with the City Clerk there, who could let us use their large conference room.  When “Callie” left, her connection to Walnut Creek went with her.  I have made several attempts to “suck up to” the City Clerk, but she has ignored my emails.  Another reason to postpone the Workshop.

However, I do have something that Walnut Creek does not.  My community includes a sizeable Clubhouse, which can easily accommodate a dozen-or-so people.  I even did a sort-of survey, via email, to the ARMA members in the Bay Area and a full half-dozen responded that they would be “interested”.

So I have placed a request to reserve the Clubhouse for a day in January, contacted the Records Management Expert, “Shep”, who had already agreed to conduct the Workshop for a mere $400.  There’s even a kitchen in the Clubhouse to set up for coffee, other beverages, lunch and so on.  We’ll see how it goes.

Meanwhile…

“Jeannie’s” surgery went very well indeed.  I haven’t mentioned it up until now, but “Jeannie” has given her OK to talk about it.  She had the exact same problem that “Alice” and I both had:  Osteoarthritis of the hip.  In other words, the cartilage that forms the “cap” at the top of the femur, inside the hip joint, had turned into something resembling moldy cheese.

So “Jeannie” decided to get the same hip-replacement surgery that “Alice” and I had both done.  In fact, coincidentally, she had the exact same surgeon that I had.  She is now very much in the recovery stage.  This hurts almost as much as the before-stage; but, as the aforementioned surgeon put it, “It’s a DIFFERENT hurt.”

And, unlike before, this hurt will abate, rather than getting progressively worse.  This, however, does take some time.

“Frankie” came out the day before the surgery and has been with “Jeannie” ever since, helping with everything.  Things like dressing-by-committee.  Walking-in-a-straight-line.  Even the shower.

The way I heard it, they tried to get “Jeannie” ready for her first post-surgery shower.  Since it was important to keep the surgery site dry, they decided to secure the area with plastic wrap.  As in, wrapping plastic around the hips.

Which is when they discovered that “Jeannie” didn’t have any plastic wrap.  So they tried substituting with non-stick aluminum foil.  The results, I’m told, were less than satisfactory.  It’s a Work In Progress (WIP).

Love, as always,

Pete
