The Weekly Letters, by A. Pedersen Wood

Dear Everyone:

The organization continues.

I actually cleared off the mountain of stuff (spelled “c-r-a-p”) from the dining table.

“Jeannie” was quite impressed last Saturday when she came by and proclaimed that it “really opens the room up”, which it did.  Apparently, she didn’t notice that the back corner of the room still resembles a loading dock more than a dining room.  But “Rome wasn’t built in a day” as they say.

The reason “Jeannie” came on Saturday was a new-to-us website that she had found that offers free graphics (spelled “p-i-c-t-u-r-e-s”) that she wanted to try printing in color.  Since I’m the one with the color printer we decided to use my place.

We found a number of images that she liked and printed.  Then she noticed a pair of scissors on a little table near the computer and immediately begin trimming the pictures.

Many, many moons ago, I discovered the advantages of keeping a large paper bag near the computer to catch paper “scraps”, such as the empty envelopes after you’ve paid the bills, draft printouts after you’ve revised them, and so on.  (The shredder, for more secure recycling, is on the other side of the computer.)  As “Jeannie” trimmed pictures, I put the leftovers in the bag.  So much easier than walking the fourteen paces across the aforementioned dining room to the “official” paper recycle bin.

When “Jeannie” was ready to leave, I found an envelope to hold the pictures.  And gathered up the paper bag, by its handy paper handles, to take to the recycle location out by the dumpster.  On the way to “Jeannie’s” car, she volunteered to take the bag for me.  And promptly threw it into the dumpster instead of the recycle location.  So much for trying to “stay green”.

Meanwhile…

The “back” bedroom is still very much a Work In Progress (WIP).  Many years ago, I knew a person who worked in an area known as WIP; I think they had something to do with Accounting.  Whenever the phone rang, they would answer, “WIP Room!”  And then laugh when people hastily hung up.

The printer is now situated on a much sturdier piece of wooden furniture (from the living room) so it no longer causes the table to rock back and forth precariously.  Instead, the table now holds multiple sorters (formerly on the dining table) for mail and such.  Now, when I print something for my files, instead of taking it into the living room and dumping it on top of the 2011 File Box, I can step a few paces across the room and dump it on top of the File Box where it sits on its shelf.  So much more efficient.

Not that it gets filed any faster.  “Rome wasn’t built…” etc.

Currently, the biggest challenge is keeping the dining table clear of all the crap that automatically lands on it.  It is, after all, the largest “handy horizontal surface” as you come in the door.  Almost like a magnet.

However, with the Holidays, and Holiday decorating, swiftly approaching, I am making a firm, conscious effort to keep the table clear.  At least, for now.  That and making a mental note:  “Never let 'Jeannie' take out the recycles.”

Love, as always,

Pete
