The Weekly Letters, by A. Pedersen Wood

November 4, 2010

Dear Everyone:

Well, the Election is over and most of us survived.

The two "princesses" (Meg and Carly) discovered that having a hefty bank account is no guarantee that you can just buy yourself an election after all, like stopping at the cosmetic counter.  For my part, when it came to the office of Governor, I didn't vote for the "princess" or the "frog", but the "frog" won anyway.  He comes from a "good ol' political family", so there's not so much surprise there.

As for the Propositions, I don't honestly remember how I voted for/against most of them, so I can't really celebrate/commiserate their success/failure.

On the plus side, I hear the Giants won the World Series.  According to the news agencies, this made many people very happy.

Today was my last "SharePoint Foundations" class for the year.  The person who will be doing this training next year "sat in" on the class to "observe".  That lasted until the first question was asked, whereupon she jumped in with both feet and fired off a very detailed answer to a very simple question.  It will be interesting to see how that works out in the New Year.

In the meantime, I off all next week (more about that in a bit.)  Then I’m back in the office for a week.  Then I’m off for Thanksgiving week.  Then I’m back in the office for three weeks and off again for the rest of the year.  And I still have 1½ days of vacation that I haven’t scheduled yet.

(No wonder the Company can’t wait to get rid of me.  30 days paid vacation!  Who can afford that?!!)

Next week is the annual ARMA International Conference, which is being held in San Francisco.  (ARMA is the Association of Records Managers and Administrators.)  When I found out that this year’s conference would be, figuratively speaking, in my own backyard, I decided that I would attend in spite of the Company.

In other words, I paid the registration myself.  So no one could order me to cancel it like they did last time.  And I’m paying for my hotel room myself (might as well do it while I’m still employed and can pay the credit card bill) and using vacation time.

What this means is I can spend the time however I want.  No reporting back on which educational sessions I did, or didn’t, attend.  No “Trip Report” required.  I could stay in my room and watch TV all day if I wanted to.

But I don’t want to.  What I want to do is spend 3½ days with other people who understand what Records Management is and appreciate it for what it can do for you.  Who knows:  I might even get a line on a possible future job.  Or not.  The main thing is to thoroughly enjoy myself.

And that’s just what I’ll do.  No Letter next week.  I’ll be back in the office November 15th.  Until then, everyone stay safe.

Love, as always,

Pete
