Love, As Always, Pete

The Weekly Letters, by A. Pedersen Wood

January 20, 2010

Dear Everyone:

We’ve all been praying for rain and lots of snow in the mountains.  Well, this week we got our wish.  A “tag team” of “winter storms” has been rolling through California since last weekend.  It has rained, sometimes heavily, every day this week, with “the big one” expected tomorrow.

Once I got into the office Monday and Tuesday, I had no reason to go outside until it was time to go home.  I keep plenty of supplies in my file cabinet:  Microwave bowls of soups and stews, pudding cups, fruit cups and, of course, multiple kinds of chips.  And nuts.  And breakfast bars.  Did I mention the big box of Goldfish® crackers in the Huddle Room?  Always plenty of food around, especially now that refrigeration isn’t a priority.

There is a “Team Room” next to my office that is seldom used.  That’s because although it has been designated a “Team Room”, it doesn’t have the usual Local Area Network (LAN) connections, power for laptops, projector installed from the ceiling, or a polycom.  So most people ignore it.  Instead, we use it as a “lunch room” and bring our food in and eat away from our desks.  It makes for a nice break in the middle of the day.

But today I had to travel to another building for a meeting.  In fact, the Project Manager (PM) even scheduled a lunch at a nearby restaurant because she found out that two of our project team members were here from “Hobby” this week.  That meant I had to bundle up my computer and take it, plus my handbag and umbrella out to the car before lunch, then take the computer from the restaurant to the other building after lunch.  While rain was pelting down at a slant (high winds.)

Luckily for me, the rain slacked off just as I was heading out to the car.  The rain started up again just as I was getting into the car.  I drove to the restaurant and parked.  I was a little bit early, so I just stayed in the car until the rain stopped again.  Then I went into the restaurant and waited for the others.

It rained again while we were eating but then, the sun came out during lunch and stayed out until we got to the other building.  During the meeting I’m sure it rained again.  There were obvious signs of a recent deluge when I left the building to drive back to my office, but the rain had stopped and stayed away until I was safely inside my office again.  And, when it was time to come home, the rain obligingly held off until I was in the condo before starting up again.

And God knows, we need the rain.  One week of wet weather won’t make up for years of drought conditions.  So keep praying.

In other news…

My back is getting better and my shoulder is much, much better.  In fact, it was so much better that I decided to do something last Saturday that I’ve been dying to do for months:  Clean the bathroom.

I’m not talking about sweeping the floor and wiping down the mirrors.  I’m talking about scrubbing the bathtub.  I haven’t been able to do it since early November, when I first went to my doctor to confirm that I had bursitis.  Even when the shoulder felt better, I didn’t want to risk a relapse.

But last Saturday I decided it was worth the risk.  Bathtub gleams and back and shoulder are no worse for the wear.  Vanities in both bathrooms are completely dust-free for the next forty-five minutes.  After that, no promises.

My work with the decommissioning project may be winding down.  Once we get the last of the forms signed, there won’t be much Information Management involvement for a while.  Only when all the applications are actually decommissioned and we set up the evergreen process (what someone will do until the Retention Periods start elapsing) will Information Management become involved again.

But I still have plenty of work to do on the Computer Based Training (CBT) for SharePoint for Power Users.  There are ten modules and we’re only working on number three.

That’s all for now.  Remember:  We still need rain and lots of snow in the mountains.

Love, as always,

Pete
