Dear Everyone:
This has been a rough summer for me.
In early June I caught a cold; nothing serious, but enough to
make me miserable for a couple of weeks.
Then, just as I was getting over the cold (but not the cough) my
back went out on me. Thus
two to three weeks of agony.
Just as I was getting over that I came down with a lovely case of
viral
stomach flu. I’m over that,
but still tend to get very tired rather quickly.
Here’s hoping this is the last of my being smacked
around like a pinball.
My days on the big GIL 3 computer project are
officially numbered. In
fact, tomorrow is my last day on the “Governance and Compliance Feature
Team.” True to form, the
team leader found a ton of work that has to be completed “as quickly as
possible” in the last couple of days.
However, I’m starting on a completely new project
that looks very exciting.
Recently my company, along with a giant paper products company, formed a
joint venture company to try and find ways to produce
ethanol from
vegetable waste. This is a
totally new company.
Currently they have five to six employees, but they plan to hire
hundreds of people. And they
want to have their Records and Information Management (RIM) Program
already in place when these people come on board.
Imagine it:
Setting up the RIM Program before you have 125 years worth of
mismanaged information to try and sort out.
How lovely is that?
And they’re not the only ones.
There’s a department in “Hobby” who has just contacted us with
much the same request. Not a
whole company, but a completely newly formed department who also thinks
getting off on the right foot is a good idea.
If we can keep them on course and pull this off, the success
stories will bring even more work in.
In other news…
Last Saturday, “Jeannie” and I met at the
hairdresser’s. Then we went
to lunch. Then we went to
one of the big office supply warehouse stores which someone at work had
told me was going out of business.
Were they ever.
Half the shelves were picked clean.
Still “Jeannie” managed to pick up some bargains.
Example: We got the
very last 8-gigabyte
flash drive they had in the store.
It retailed for $69.99.
After the store discount, plus a coupon that I happened to have,
she got it for $17.49. Those
plastic wallets that she likes to put transcripts in would normally have
cost her $62.91. She paid
$15.73.
The
toner and
inkjet cartridges were full price,
but everything else was 75% off.
“Jeannie” made out like a bandit.
Of course, we put everything on my credit card, because I get
points, but we all know “Jeannie”’s good for it.
Besides, I know where she lives.
Love, as always,
Pete
