The Weekly Letters, by A. Pedersen Wood

May 22, 2008

Dear Everyone:

Late night last night due to ARMA, so this will be short.

The Good News is that we found a new home for the Chapter Library!  For a couple of years now, it’s been in a box under the table in my cubicle.  But when we traded in the cubicles for TSIO (Two Squeezed Into One), I lost the table.

Now the box is under my desk, but that space is too valuable to spend on a box of books that no one looks at.  So I added the item to the Chapter Board Meeting’s agenda last week.  Earlier this week, I dragged the box out from under the desk and opened to make a list of the contents.

The first book I pulled out of the box dealt with what to do about water damage to documents, books, microfilm, etc.  Remember last November when I took Part Six of the Certified Records Manager Exam?  The first of two 40-point questions had to do with a consultant being called in to a microfilming company that was suffering water damage due to an accident.  If I’d known about this book; and if I’d read it, I might have been able to answer that question.  As it was, I took the second question, which had to do with an international import/export company whose Chief Information Officer (CIO) had some peculiar ideas about accounting.

In any case, I passed the Exam (96 out of 100 points), so it doesn’t matter.  But there are others in my work group who still have parts of the Exam to complete.  They might want to know about this book and some of the others.

Other items in the box are, in my opinion, completely out-dated and obsolete.  And another member of the Board has some materials that he wants to donate to the Chapter Library.

As to the new home?  The Chapter’s Director of Programs (the person who tries to find interesting Speakers) is part owner of a small business that stores records for companies that don’t want to do it themselves.  She offered to keep the box of books in her warehouse for a reduced rate.  They’ll even set up their system so that Chapter members can request books be checked out to them, just like records.  And we’re going to add the list of books, etc. to our Chapter website.

Speaking of the website, another item on the agenda, we agreed to revise the layout somewhat, to make the sponsors’ advertisement more visible.  And, in return for free advertising on the website, the records company decided not to charge us for storing the box of books and such.  This is what is called a “Win-Win Situation.”

In other news…

“Marshall” came up from Fresno last weekend so he and “Jeannie” could attend a wine tasting ceremony somewhere near Monterey on Saturday.  They drove to San Francisco (or San Jose, I’m not sure which) to get on a bus that would take them to “Monterey” for the day.  Only they were actually in the mountains somewhere and “Jeannie” said it was very hot.  (We were coming out of a record heat wave last weekend.)  She also said the bus was a very good idea, particularly for the trip back, since they could “rest” after several hours of tasting wine.

On Sunday morning, “Jeannie” said she and “Marshall” would just “kick around” until it was time for him to leave.  So I went to see Iron Man at my local theater.  Because the theater is air-conditioned.  And I had a free ticket from last Christmas.

The movie stars Robert Downey, Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow and Jeff Bridges.  Tony Stark (Downey) is one of those people who are so rich that their lives are empty.  He’s an arms dealer who gets into some trouble and gets out of it a changed man.  Did I mention this is based on a popular comic book character?

Paltrow plays his faithful assistant and Bridges is his mentor and business partner.  Once Stark gets back home from his little adventure, he decides to become a pacifist.  Beware of altruists; they’ll stab you in the back for the very best reasons.  Also beware of greedy people; they’ll stab you anywhere for a penny.

Downey has a lot of good one-liners.  There are some brilliant fight scenes and lively action sequences.  It’s the ideal movie to watch for the air-conditioning.  Especially if you happen to have free tickets.

Love, as always,

Pete
