The Weekly Letters, by A. Pedersen Wood

September 8, 1995

Dear Everyone:

Might as well get the bad news out of the way first:  The will be no Letter next week.

Why?  Because I’m going to be out of town.

Where?  “Cincinnati”, Ohio, on the banks of Lake Erie.

Now, you may be asking yourself, “Why is she going to “Cincinnati”?  Could it be to see the world-famous, and recently opened, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?”

Hardly.  Musically, I grew up in the Big Band era of the ‘30’s and ‘40’s, thanks to the jukebox that was one of Mother’s crazy ideas that turned out to be yet another stroke of true genius.  It played 78-rpm records, sat at the end of the downstairs hall, and provided many hours of enjoyment, not to mention functioning as a group alarm clock.  Since Mother had the only real alarm clock in the house, she would get up first, turn on the coffee-maker on her way through the kitchen, go downstairs, where all of us kids had our rooms, push a few buttons on the jukebox at random, go back upstairs and begin making breakfast, serene in the knowledge that nobody sleeps through Perry Como singing Jukebox Baby full blast at 6:00 am.  Nobody.

There is a chance that I might actually see the aforementioned Hall of Fame, if only from the outside.  But, I’m going to “Cincinnati” to attend the Annual Spectrum Users Conference.  Spectrum is another one of the software systems I support.  And “The Brady Company”, which develops and markets Spectrum, holds a Conference every September.  Actually, it’s kind of a nice deal since Company gets to send three to four people “free” each year.  We don’t have to pay the Registration Fee because we’re such a “big” customer.

It’s at the Stouffer Hotel, in beautiful downtown “Cincinnati”, which is much like beautiful downtown San Francisco.  The streets are perfectly safe.  It’s the people you have to watch out for.  Actually, this particular hotel is great because it’s right next to a shopping mall.  You just go through the lobby, take the double doors on the right, turn at the Disney Store and you’re there.  Perfect for that last minute “Oh, my God!  I have to bring home a present for the little one.”

The “little one” in this case is thirty-mphmph, but so what?  I expect presents when she goes on trips.  Last year, I lucked out, finding a Muffy Vanderbear Christmas Angel Tree Ornament, thus scoring bear-points, Muffy-points, and Christmas Angel-points.  This year should be even easier, since I’m sure there’s at least one shop that carries Vanderbear-Wear, not forgetting Hoppy Vanderhare.  After all, it’s getting a little late in the year for the Spring Outfit and garden tea ensemble they’re in now.

The attachment is compliments of “Jeannie”, who got it from someone at work.

Oh, by the way, there’s a good chance that there will be no Letter the week after next either, since I’ll be in the Records Management Conference that RACS is putting on.  Spectrum goes from Wednesday to Saturday and Records Management begins the following Monday and ends on Wednesday.  After two conferences back-to-back, I may not be coherent enough to write my own name.  We’ll just have to wait and see.

Love, as always,

Pete
