Dear Everyone:

“Jeannie” broke her telephone a few weeks ago.  Drop it from a high place enough times and this will happen.  Now, apart from the fact that the very concept of “Jeannie” without a phone is unimaginable, her phone answering machine also wouldn't work, because there was no phone to ring and trigger the machine to answer.  This made leaving messages extremely difficult.

I suggested that she get a cordless phone, since dragging the cord was frequently the reason for it dropping from a high place to begin with.  But she didn't think she could afford it.  In fact, she wasn't sure she could afford a simple Trimline®.  So, until she could manage to get a new phone of some type, I loaned her the one from my bedroom.  So, for now, “Jeannie” has a phone.

We went to get our hair cut last Saturday, and were met with the news that the place is closing in another month or two.  The reason?  The developers who own the shopping center want to do some renovating.  And they want the tenants to pay for it.  Believe it or not, they've pulled this trick in other locations before.  But, in this case, the hair salon people said, "No way!" and have started making plans to find other places to work.  "Yvonne" will let us know where she lands before our hair gets too long and "silver".

Needless to say, the shopkeepers around the salon are upset because they get a lot of "walk-in" trade from people who get their hair done there.  Take “Jeannie”, for instance.  We went into the Cupola, a gift boutique next door to the salon, after getting our hair done.  What does “Jeannie” spy but "Hoppy VanderHare", a companion to the Muffy Vanderbear that I brought back from Texas.  Hoppy was wearing virtually the same outfit as the Spring Affair that I gave “Jeannie” (Muffy, really) for Easter.  Hoppy's was a different color, and featured an opening in the back to accommodate her cottontail, a design that shows more consideration for the comfort of the wearer then you usually see in clothing these days.  Apart from that, Hoppy and “Jeannie's” Muffy were "twins".

Well, of course “Jeannie” bought Hoppy.  What's more, she called me Monday night, all excited, because she'd found some new outfits, or something, for Hoppy and Muffy.  Let's face it, deep in our hearts, some of us never outgrow playing with dolls.  Of course, since I no longer have a phone in the bedroom, I had to come out into the living room, with a mouthful of toothpaste, to receive this news.

And yes, this is the same “Jeannie” who can't spring $24 to buy a new phone as long as she has mine to use.

Didn't see any movies last weekend, because of the hairdresser.  Did do a lot of shopping instead.  Bought three new pairs of jeans, having suddenly discovered that the ones I've been wearing were developing holes.  Still need to replace the sneakers; but I did get the screw in my steering wheel replaced and had the bad windshield wiper fixed.  Good thing since it insists on still raining here in "Sunny" California.  Who ordered this weather, anyway?

Love, as always,

Pete
