Love, As Always, Pete

The Weekly Letters, by A. Pedersen Wood

May 5, 1995

Dear Everyone:

OK, it's official and locked down.  The celebration of the folks’ 50th Anniversary (and, coincidentally, the Great Summer Birthday Bash) will take place on Sunday, July 23, 1995 in Canby.  “Frankie” and I agreed and no one else has raised any objections, so the date is set.  Mark your calendars.  Also, you might want to reserve a room at The Canby Inn (503-XXX-5400).  Homestead could get a little crowded this year.

The more observant of you will have already noticed that this is also “Richard’s” birthday.  Since he's just a year behind me, I can tell you exactly how old he’ll be:

As old as his tongue and a little bit older than his teeth.

In other news…

This has been one of those dreadful weeks when you can't get anything done to save your life.  First, the meetings, sometimes three in one day.  Then, the frantic phone calls and e-mail marked Urgent!!! from some character who suddenly needs some information before noon, his time.  Since he's two hours ahead of you, you're already two hours behind on his deadline even before you get the "request" (spelled d-e-m-a-n-d), which came in while you are in another interminable meeting.

By the time I’d get home in the evening, I'd be too frustrated, and too tired, to even consider doing any cleaning (which didn't get done on the weekend because I was too busy).

"My place is a mess," I wailed to “Jeannie”.

"Nonsense," she scoffed.  "I can out-mess you in an hour, with one hand tied behind my back."

(There we go again, we Woods.  Always competing; always overachieving.)

Movie review…

While You Were Sleeping.  A very pleasant piece of fluff.  Sandra Bullock (Demolition Man, Speed) as a toll-taker on the Chicago mass transit system, is mistaken for a comatose young man's fiancée by his family.  They immediately take her into the family (sound like anyone you know?) before she can explain the mix up.  Then she's afraid to tell the truth for fear the grandmother, played by Glynis Johns, will keel over dead at the news.

In the meantime, she falls for his brother.  You can see where this is leading, of course; but it's fun to tag along.  Supporting cast are all delightful.  Worth a matinee price.

OK, OK, what was I doing at the movies if I was too busy to clean house?

Enjoying myself.  Have to set priorities, you know.

Love, as always,

Pete
