Dear Everyone:
Mrs. Malaprop
lives!
For some reason, the subject of malapropisms came up in a column in the
San
Francisco Chronicle last week and offerings have been trickling
in all week. See attached.
Now, about the Christmas List. I've
already had two requests to get the lead out and send out this year's
list. OK, OK, I've been busy.
I did look in all my computer
files, thinking surely I saved it last year…but I couldn't find it.
So, last night I went digging
through my files (I can't believe I have for file pockets
filled with these letters),
but could only find the list from last year.
I even asked “Miranda” in San
Francisco to go through “Mehitabel’s” PC (which used to be mine) to see
if I'd left it somewhere on the C: drive.
No luck.
At this point I decided to give up all hope and just start over from
scratch. Adding Mother and Dad to
the mix was going to stir things up enough to not worry about somebody
getting the same person as they did three years ago anyway.
Then, when I was looking for
something else entirely, what
should pop up on a diskette that I
swear I checked last night
but "XMAS.WK1" the
Lotus 123 spreadsheet I've been looking for.
Now if I can just figure out how
to import it into
Excel as I don't have Lotus in “Livermore”.
This weekend, “Jeannie” and I will go over the list, with as many
long-distance calls to confer with Mother, “Frankie”, “Alice” and anyone
else who answers the phone, and the 1994 Christmas List
will go out next week, I
promise.
How did it get to be October
already?
Work has been busy and will get busier still.
This week I "officially" kicked
into high gear, working extra hours to get as much done as possible.
We have to write a complete User
Guide for
Versatile,
ready to publish by the end of this month.
That's only 3 weeks and we’re
still in the outline stage.
Then we'll prepare to give to training sessions during the second and
third weeks in November. We plan
to do the actual conversion between Thanksgiving and Christmas.
And there are about 30,000
details yet to be decided. This
is like preparing for a wedding, only, after it's over, you don't get to
go on a honeymoon.
Haven't been to the movies since before I went to “Cincinnati”.
Last weekend, “Jeannie” was in
Lake Tahoe and I was pounding away on the computer.
Someone at “Jeannie's” office had
a couple of free nights in a Tahoe lodge and couldn't use them, so they
gave them to “Jeannie”.
She offered to let me come along; but, knowing how much I love traveling
(not!), and how much I enjoy staying in hotels (hah!), and how I feel
about gambling (senseless waste of time and money), she didn't really
expect me to leap at the chance. Besides,
once I realized that she would be gone all weekend, I kept finding more
and more work that I could do on the computer at home, thus freeing up
office time for other things.
I do have hopes of getting out this weekend, providing we get the
Christmas List squared away first.
Other than that, there's not much going on.
The weather, apart from a
completely unexpected
thunderstorm last Tuesday, remains its usual California self:
Clear, lows in the 50s, highs in
the 70s. I know you don't really
want to read all the details of my User Guide Module on How To Do
Keyword Searching, complete with 19 individual screen prints, so I'll
leave you with the malapropisms.
Love, as always,
Pete
