Love, As Always, Pete

Dear Everyone:

Not much going on around here.  Everyone's settling in after the Holidays.

“Jeannie” and I are trying to get back into our habit of attending at least two movies per month, doing our part to keep Hollywood, and the popcorn industry, afloat.

This week, last Saturday, we went to see Hook, Stephen Spielberg's attempt at rewriting the Peter Pan legend.  It was okay, but not great.  Robin Williams plays a grown-up Peter who has to rediscover his childhood in order to rescue his kids.  He does an energetic job of it; but, on the other hand, who could do all those mid-air somersaults and barrel-roles and not look energetic.

Dustin Hoffman plays Capt. Hook.  Actually, Dustin Hoffman plays Terry Thomas, playing Capt. Hook, trying to be villainous and lovable at the same time.  Compared to Alan Rickman's gem of a bad guy in Robin Hood (Dances with Peasants), Hoffman comes off as, well, frumpy.

On Sunday, I started taking down the Christmas decorations, which is when I confirmed that, yes, someone had lifted my wreath off the front door.  Talk about "unclear on the concept" of Christmas!  Taking down the decorations turned into neatening which suddenly escalated into a full-scale cleaning frenzy.  I vacuumed, polished, dusted and washed things that haven't been cleaned in years.  And treated all the drains to a Drano cocktail.  About the only thing I missed was the top of the refrigerator, which I can’t see and so never think of.

We got a couple of good rains in the past week.  Nothing like Oregon, of course (or Texas, for that matter); but as I stood under my umbrella, I couldn't help thinking:  Another 40 days and nights of this and we’ll have that old drought fixed for sure.

Love, as always,

Pete
