Love, As Always, Pete

The Weekly Letters, by A. Pedersen Wood

March 20, 1991

Dear Everyone:

Busy, busy, short, short week!

Short week because I’ll be off Friday.  “Jeannie” and I are going to Monterey, she to attend a seminar and I to hang around the pool and read Silence of the Lambs.  We saw the movie—Four Star Scary.

Short days because it’s my week to drive the big, blue brute for my van pool; so I have to leave work at 4:00, which is seriously cramping my style, which usually consists of starting work at 4:00.  Up until that time, I’m just dealing with all the day’s interruptions.

Busy because I’m working on yet another Active Files Project for ”Public Manipulation” (this makes three now).  This is a “rush” job because some guy from “Hobby” is involved and he goes back to Texas at the end of next week.  Unfortunately, “Alma” decided that this would be a marvelous opportunity for our new person, “Ken White”, to get his feet wet on an Active Files Project by “helping” me.

So “Ken” and I went and measured everything in sight in the present File Room, which suffers from the usual “file room syndrome”:  When in doubt, dump it in the file room.  But when I needed to use the raw data (so many filing inches of this, that and the other), I couldn’t because “Ken” had decided it would be more useful if he took it away and typed it all into a Macintosh computer so he could “sort” it.

“Ken” is very fond of this Macintosh, which lives in a PC Demo room up on the 18th Floor.  Which means every time I need some information, I have to go up to 18 to find him and it.  I suspect that this is all a part of “Ken’s” campaign to get a Mac on his desk.  I’ve already lost count of the number of times he’s complained “This could be done so much faster on the computer”.

Unfortunately for “Ken”, Mac’s and PC’s aren’t especially compatible (an important word for computers) and “Alma” doesn’t want to get “mixed breeds” of computers.  Unfortunately for me, “Ken” is determined to prove her wrong.

The other reason we’re so busy this week is that we’re moving.  Remember when I mentioned that our new manager thinks we should all have our office over at 225 “Beelzebub” where the rest of Forms and Records Management is already located?  Well, that’s not where we’re going.

We’re moving to “temporary” quarters on the 30th Floor of this building at 575 MMM Street.  Which means I’ll be moving 2 doors down and 17 floors up from where I am now.  The Good News is that we’ll each get our own office!  The Bad News is that it will only last until CREMCO has our “permanent” quarters ready in about six months.  (CREMCO is Company Real Estate Management Co and they own all of the Company buildings.  We’re just tenants.  Also, “Six months” usually means more like “nine months” in CREMCO months.  They always under-guesstimate.)

We’re scheduled to move on Friday.  But, because I’ll be on my way to Monterey on Friday, I’ll have to box up everything tomorrow which makes this week even shorter.  But hey!  Anything to have an office of my own, even if it’s just for 6-9 months.

“Kevin” says we’ll have to beef up our quarterly status reports to make us look more productive so we can “justify” individual offices when we move again.

Love, as always,

Pete
