Dear Everyone:
I can see! I can see!!
I can SEE!!!
OK, technically, I’ve been able to see well enough since the last
cataract surgery.
Nevertheless, my eyesight, while adequate, was not as good as I knew it
could be.
Last week I had the final, official examination at the eye clinic.
Barring anything going untoward, I am finished.
The next day, I went to the optometrist for a full exam of both
eyes. Officially, I have
20/20 vision in both eyes up close.
But I needed a prescription to see as well further away, a fact of which
I’ve been unhappily aware for the past four weeks.
As soon as the optometrist printed out the new prescription, I
sent it off to our cousin, “Perry”, at XXX Opticians.
This past Wednesday, I got a call that the new lenses had arrived.
Knowing that “Jeannie” was working at home that day, I dragged
her with me. She helped pick
out the new frames. After
all, she’s going to be seeing them more than I will.
The moment “Perry” put the first new pair of glasses on my nose, it was
like an enormous weight was lifted off my shoulders.
Suddenly, I could see across the room clearly, instead of
fuzzily. What a relief!
Also, the new lenses are wafer-thin compared to the old lenses, which
were much thicker. So the
new glasses are also much lighter, and more comfortable, to wear.
And it’s beginning to look like I won’t need a second pair of glasses to
work at the computer. Even
better.
Now I feel ready to take the eye exam next March when my driver’s
license comes up for renewal.
When you pass a certain age, the DMV requires you to come in
physically to renew the license, partly to prove that you’re still
alive, and to prove you can still see well enough to drive.
I can’t just go online and pay the fee.
Also, AAA can’t help the way they can to renew the registration on my
car. Another thing AAA won’t
be able to help with is something called a “REAL ID”.
We asked about that last weekend when “Jeannie” and I went in to
transfer ownership of my previous car over to her.
A REAL ID is required to board a flight to anywhere within the United
States beginning next October.
Since my driver’s license expires next March, that will be the
time to gather the necessary documentation and make an appointment to
take care of both at the same time.
One thing the person at AAA did tell us is that you don’t have to wait
until your driver’s license is about to expire to renew it.
That’s good news since the first available appointment at the DMV
is halfway through next February.
I might want to get in line as soon as possible.
Love, as always,
Pete
