Dear Everyone:
As I have mentioned before, I typically spend a few hours up north in
Martinez,
at the Senior Community Center, on Tuesdays.
I spend the time
crocheting. Others like
to knit, do
needlepoint,
embroidery, and
so on. There is one “lady of
a certain age” whose primary goal seems to be sewing buttons onto dish
towels, to make them easier to hang on a hook.
Naturally, the items that I crochet wind up being donated to the Center,
just like the dish towels.
They all go into big plastic bins that are stored in a very large closet
until it’s time for a Bazaar.
The Bazaar generally coincides with a
Pancake Breakfast.
These breakfasts take place on the second Sunday of each month,
and are intended to work, along with the Bazaar, as a fundraiser for the
Center. People come in, eat
a plate of pancakes for $4.00, and “shop” at the Bazaar, which consists
of some tables with various handcrafted items laid out on them.
Over the past few months, the breakfasts have barely broken even, and
very little was sold at the Bazaar.
The same people were always coming and, let’s face it:
There are only so many pancakes
that one can eat. And only
so many hand-knitted dish cloths one kitchen can contain.
So the Powers That Be decided to give the whole thing a rest over the
summer. The next Pancake
Breakfast and Bazaar are now scheduled for September 9th.
A few weeks ago, “Lenore”, the tireless volunteer who manages the Craft
Workshops that produce the Bazaar items, passed out a list of
“preferred” donations for the upcoming Bazaar:
Hats for Men and Women
Towels
Fingerless Gloves Men and Women
Long scarfs…Men’s in medium width
Cowell Scarfs Women
Slippers men and women and kids
Anything Baby Things… No preemie or small sizes.
Babies are much bigger now.
Well, that’s pretty specific.
Luckily the lady who sews buttons on dish towels will have plenty
to do.
Slippers!!! Did someone say,
“Slippers”???
As pretty much everyone can attest to, I can crochet slippers!
All kinds of slippers, as long as they’re all the same pattern,
meaning small, medium and large.
In fact, I have two pairs already made and am currently working on
number three.
Also, fingerless gloves. I
already have a great pattern for those.
However, it was designed for a fine yarn called “sock weight”,
and a very small hook.
Worsted weight is far more plentiful and calls for a larger hook and
fewer stitches and rounds.
I’ve already gone through the “Goldilocks
Stage”. (This looks too
small; this looks too big; this looks OK.)
So now I can rip through a pair in a couple of evenings.
I’m also taking a stab at a pattern I found for a ribbed hat, for men or
women.
All of this, of course, is for the September Bazaar, in three weeks.
Just remember: I’m only
doing this to satisfy my Crochet Cravings.
It’s either that or crocheted car covers.
Ditto candlestick holders.
Can we all say “obsessive-compulsive behavior is a family trait”?
And don’t worry about those two dragons I’m still working on.
They’ll be done in plenty of time for the
Christmas Bazaar.
That doesn’t even happen until November.
Love, as always,
Pete
