Dear Everyone:
Last October, I bought a new
laptop with the new
Windows 8 operating
system…and hated it. At the
time, I had a number of things going on, including the annual
ARMA
International Conference in
San Diego.
So I threw up my hands, figuratively speaking, and put the new laptop
aside “for the time being”.
All well and good, since the previous laptop was still working.
And time marches on.
Last month, I finally said to myself:
“Self,” said I, “it’s time to ‘bite the bullet’ and start using
the not-so-new laptop.” And
so I did.
Actually, without all the pressure on, it was fairly easy, particularly
when I realized that by just clicking on the “Desktop” Tile on the
Start
Screen, I could get to the much-more-familiar desktop that looked and
(almost) acted just like the “old” system.
And that was much easier.
However. I had been using
the “old” laptop for a number of months and it was now “out-of-sync”
with the “new” one. Let’s
face it: I use this puppy
all day every day. Really
couldn’t live without it, and so on.
So…
Copied a lot of “less-than-old” files from the “old” system to the “new”
one, especially the one I use to keep track of my checking account.
Paid a lot of bills between October and January.
In that case, I wound up making a “Backup” copy and starting a
completely “new” account “restored” from the “backup”.
And all is well.
Of course, every once in a while I’ll pull up some file and realize that
it sort of got lost in the crossover from “old” to “new” to “old” to
“new” again. But that’s not
too much trouble. The “old”
laptop is right next to me on a small table.
All I have to do is fire it up, copy the file in question to a
USB memory drive (looks like
Tweety Bird), copy it to the “new” laptop
and everything is “back to normal”, assuming anything is “normal’ these
days.
And I’m even starting to get used to Windows 8.
After all, I’ve been using much the same system on my
cell phone
for more than a couple of years.
(Note to self: Time
to look into getting a new cell phone.)
I have found that I can just click on the “Microsoft Money” Tile to
check the Stock Market. Not
that I have any stock to follow.
(I “diversified” many years ago and no longer own any stock in
Company that I know of.) And
I even figured out how to get out of one of these Tiles and back to
“Normal” again.
More importantly, I have found where Microsoft put all the “free” games,
like Solitaire. Turns out
you have to download the games to use them, but they don’t cost
anything, at least at first.
And I have to admit, I like the new “3D”
Mahjong much better than the
“old” one. I’ve already
burned through all the Easy ones, and all but the last of the Medium
ones. Next up:
Hard and Expert.
Tally ho!
Love, as always,
Pete
