The Weekly Letters, by A. Pedersen Wood

March 31, 2010

Dear Everyone:

ERRATA:  I have to make a correction to last week’s Letter.  In it I wrote about the AHM, “… a variety of vehicle comprised of, but not exclusive to, large pickup trucks and high-end (usually leased) luxury cars.”  It should have read, “…a variety of vehicle comprised of, but not exclusive to, large pickup trucks, sport utility vehicles (SUV) and high-end (usually leased) luxury cars.”

This is not to say that everyone who drives an AHM is a rude SOB.  But last night, as I paused after the gate, the driver who deliberately pulled to the left, then drove around me to continue on up the road, was driving a Lexus.  And the driver of the vehicle behind the Lexus, who honked at me when I yielded to the visitor on my left, was in a large pickup truck.  And the driver who honked at me this evening, was driving a pickup.  As for the Lexus, as I was turning in to Eastridge Drive, he was coming out, proving that a) he did not observe the posted speed limit; and b) he didn’t live here.

Anyway…

A few weekends ago, I decided to do my income taxes.  I had everything I thought I would need, including the tax software that I have used for many years (a new upgrade each year, of course.)  But last year, you may recall, I sold a piece of property.  Maybe I put some numbers in the wrong field, or maybe the tax software really thought that the sale of the property constituted earned income.  In any case, it said I owed the Federal government over $17,000.00.

When I told “Jeannie” this, over the phone, she said, “No” and gave me the name and number of her tax accountant.  I called the following Monday (last week) and received the word that he would take me as a new client, but the only thing he could do at this late date was send in an extension.  He called me last Friday and asked me to fax him my W-2 form, which I did this last Monday.

So I spent a lot of time last Sunday finding all the forms that the tax accountant would need and making copies of them.  I also entered all the information, such as how much we spent fixing up the townhouse to make it saleable, into a spreadsheet.  So I’m ready as soon as he calls to make an appointment.

In other news…

Remember Documentum, the electronic document management system that I used to teach people how to use up until about four years ago?  At that time, there was a department that took care of training for any software products offered by the Information Technology Company that we now work for.  They took the training away from us and created a Computer Based Training (CBT) developed from the training materials that I had used.

Well, four years later, that department doesn’t exist anymore and the person who developed the CBT left the company.  In the meantime, the Documentum Support group has made major upgrades to the software so that it doesn’t resemble the CBT at all.  The CBT even has a link to the Company Retention Schedule that changed last October, so anyone trying to follow the link is lost.

So now I’m “producing” a new CBT, using the Adobe Captivate 4 software that we acquired to make the SharePoint training.  At times it’s a lot of fun figuring out how to use the software.  At other times it’s extremely frustrating when it doesn’t do what it’s supposed to do.  All the “Help” articles and the book I’m using assume that everything works the way it’s supposed to, so there’s no “Help” when it doesn’t.

But I am figuring it all out, and when I’m finished, I’ll be able to claim lots of Continuing Education credits towards extending my Certified Records Manager certification.  It’s a Win-Win for all.

Love, as always,

Pete
