Dear Everyone:
I love my new home!
I love the master bedroom, which is actually larger
than the one at the old place.
I love the nice, big bathroom, and the full-size kitchen and an
actual dining room. I do not
love the laundry closet, but we can’t have everything.
Last Wednesday was “packing day”.
A friend wanted to help, but had to work.
So instead, she hired her usual “housekeeper” to help me.
In less than three hours we had boxed up all the books (except
one small bookcase that I had overlooked, but which “Jeannie” handled
the next day.) We even
loaded up all the pots and pans from the one lower cabinet the old
kitchen had and moved them to the new kitchen.
On Thursday the movers arrived right on time and
started shrink-wrapping furniture and picking up piles of boxes
three-high. Of course, some
things that weren’t supposed to get moved got moved anyway; but that’s
par for the course. The
beauty of this move was: 1)
I didn’t “have to be out by 5:00 PM or there’s a penalty!”
2) I wasn’t moving to
Friday was spent doing a little unpacking and
getting the cable TVs and
Internet working.
The cable person had a bit of trouble because apparently the
outlets in the bedrooms had never been activated.
I noticed that the phone didn’t work in either of the bedrooms
also. I guess no one ever
tried to use the connections before.
Anyway, the cable person figured out a way to “splice” the
existing connection and get the ones in the bedrooms working.
Saturday was the day “Jeannie” and I got our hair
cut, so I wasn’t able to do much towards settling in.
On Sunday I piled empty boxes onto my little hand truck and
headed down to the old place.
Filled boxes with stuff from the kitchen and various closets and
ferried them up to the new place.
Our niece, “Liza”, who’s currently attending
graduate studies at
UC Berkeley, came out to visit and see the new
place. She and “Jeannie”
helped ferry more boxes filled with stuff from the old place to the new
one. Then I made three
round-trips on Monday and two on Tuesday.
By the time I took a bath Tuesday evening, in
preparation for returning to work yesterday, I had made quite a dent in
the old-to-new requirement.
However, I also realized that I had done a little too much.
I have bumps and bruises, dents and divots, and
battle scars of every persuasion.
Every muscle in my body was aching the next morning.
However, the master bedroom and living room are operational.
The kitchen is adequate for the moment (no more drinking from
plastic cups.) The dining
room is still a staging area and the second bedroom is piled high with
boxes.
I have even begun to settle into a routine of
sorts. There’s no rush to
unpack everything at once. I
can take as much time as I need.
And I’m sure I’ll find my computer
glasses in a box somewhere.
Love, as always,
Pete
