Love, As Always, Pete

The Weekly Letters, by A. Pedersen Wood

Dear Everyone:

Movies.  When the summer movies started coming out, “Jeannie” refused to see any of “the threes”.  No Pirates 3; no Shrek 3; No Spiderman 3.  This reduced the supply of possible movies by quite a bit.

I wanted to see Knocked Up, which I had heard and read was actually quite good.  “Alice” agreed with me and recommended it.  “Jeannie” got out of it by employing a technicality.  Ocean’s Thirteen, while actually a “3”, had a different name.  Plus she realized that the movie is filled with gorgeous guys that she wouldn’t mind watch reading the phone directory.

So we agreed last Saturday that she would come to my place at 11:30 and we would go see the movie at the theater around the block at 11:50.  We picked this theater because I happened to have won free tickets for it in a raffle.

I was puttering around the house, putting away groceries, generally neatening.  Then I went upstairs to work on bills to be paid.  Right at 11:30, I heard a sound downstairs that I thought was “Jeannie” letting herself in; so I shut down the computer.  But when I got downstairs, no “Jeannie”.

By 11:45 I realized that we probably weren’t going to get to the movie on time, so I decided that we would probably just go to lunch instead.  “Jeannie” showed up at 11:50.  I told her that the movie had already started, let’s go to lunch instead.

“What time does the movie start?” she asked.

“11:50.”

“What time is it now?”

“11:52.”

“Jeannie” got the strangest look on her face as she looked around my place at all the clocks that did, indeed, show the time as eight minutes before noon.  That’s when she realized that the clock in her car wasn’t 22 minutes ahead of time.  The clock in her car, which she always kept 22 minutes fast, had been reset to the correct time.

This explained why she had barely made her jobs on time all last week.

Someone, we won’t speculate as to who, had “fixed” the clock in “Jeannie’s” car for her.  Personally, I don’t see how keeping the time “ahead” works; but “Jeannie” counts on it.

So, instead of seeing Ocean’s Thirteen we went to my favorite Mexican restaurant for lunch.  Then we stopped at a discount store; but they didn’t have what “Jeannie” was looking for, so it was on to the mall.  “Jeannie” wanted to see if she could find some candles of a special size.  Her cat keeps jumping up on the table where the candles are burning and setting her tail on fire.  “Jeannie” had a plan to remedy this if she could find candles that were the right size.  There’s a candle store at the mall.

Only the candle store had moved.  It was still at the mall, just at the other end from where we had come in.  We got directions from the friendly lady with the unfortunate hair at the Information Booth.  While “Jeannie” looked for “cat-proof” candles, I realized that we were not far from a store that features clothing for women “of generous proportions.”

Once “Jeannie” had her candles, we went to the women’s store.  I was hoping to find a top in a shade of blue similar to one I’d had to discard when it unraveled in the wash.  Turns out, it was my lucky day.

Not only did they have simple knit tops in a variety of styles and dozens of colors, but they were all on sale.  I picked out several, and even bought one for “Jeannie” because it was exactly the right shade of green that she needed to go with a lavender skirt and jacket.

So we didn’t see the movie but, for less than $75, I have a whole new wardrobe for work.  Can’t beat that.

Love, as always,

Pete
