Love, As Always, Pete

The Weekly Letters, by A. Pedersen Wood

April 5, 2007

Dear Everyone:

The project that I am currently assigned to hit a bit of a lull last week, as far as I was concerned.  I had been applying standards to various Conceptual Designs, Business Requirements and Use Case Scenarios.  But once that was done, I didn’t have very much to do.

The leader of our particular part of the puzzle was too busy getting ready to fly off to Kazakhstan for a two-week trip to give me any more work direction.  So I spent last Friday afternoon cleaning the emails out of my electronic In Box.  I got it down from over 4500 to under 1000.

This Monday, I had one meeting with a person on the training sub-team (these are the lucky people who are going to be teaching over 52,000 people worldwide on how to use the new system, including our all-important File Plan.)  After that, I had no more meetings the rest of this week.

So I said to myself:  “Self,” said I, “we’re having legendary California spring weather; not too cold, not too hot.  Your calendar has been miraculously cleared.  Take the rest of the week off.”

So I did.

I spent Tuesday sleeping in, then completed my Income Taxes and all the 2006 filing.  Wednesday I spent running around doing errands, overdid it, actually.  As for today, when “Jeannie” found out I was taking advantage of this convergence of good weather and no work, she decided to take advantage herself and volunteered me to hang out at her place while she went to work.

Today, the upstairs flooring began to be installed.  It is far from finished.  Nevertheless, the remodel is beginning to take shape.  The kitchen is almost completed.  Last night, “Jeannie’s” plumber friend installed the instant hot water dispenser.  The stove is finally in between the counters instead of sitting in the middle of the room.

“Jeannie’s” cats might even go home this weekend.  We are, as it happens, in Week Six of the Occupation.  That’s how long my fluffy houseguests have been ruling the roost.

However, a couple of weeks ago, I realized that I didn’t have to sleep pinned between warm little bodies.  Instead, just before bedtime, I would give them each a small “late night snack” of fresh kibble.  While they’re gobbling, I go upstairs to my room and simply shut the door.

By the time they get upstairs, the door is closed.  Of course, they yell, “Open the door!” but I just ignore them.  After a few minutes, they go off and sleep somewhere else.  And everybody’s happy.  At least, I am.

Love, as always,

Pete
