Love, As Always, Pete

Dear Everyone:

My furry, little houseguests are settling into a routine.

When I roll out of bed around 4:30 in the morning, they are both comfortable sprawled on top of the comforter.  I, on the other hand, am barely hanging onto the edge.  Good thing it’s time to get up anyway.

As I go through my usual morning ritual, they run downstairs to see if their bowls have magically filled with food.  Not finding any, they come back upstairs.  One will come into the bedroom and ask, “Are you ready yet?”

Obviously, I’m not.  That one leaves and after a while the other comes in and asks, “Are you ready yet?”  No.

After that, they camp out on the stairs so I can’t get away without passing them.  When I actually am ready to leave for work, we all go downstairs and I give them each a handful of the very special cat food that “Jeannie” provided.  Then I pack up my breakfast, PDA, cell phone and whatever else I need and leave.

During the day, they mostly sleep, chase each other around the house, leave little surprises on the floor, and look out the window.

When I arrive in the evening, they’re waiting at the door.  Actually, they’re hoping that they can get out the door because they’re dying to be outside.  Or at least, that’s what they think until they discover it’s raining.  Then they’re not so sure.

Once we’re all inside, I clean the litter boxes (they each have their own).  This may help to reduce the number of surprises on the floor.  Then I give them each another handful of special food, plus a little treat (or “bribes” as “Jeannie” calls them.)

Then I do chores, maybe catch up on a little deferred viewing, maybe read a book.  Then I take my bath.  Myrna in particular hates bath time.  She doesn’t like the fact that I close the door while I’m in the bathroom.  She sits outside and howls.  Maybe she’s afraid I’ll drown and won’t be around to feed her anymore.

Then we all settle down for the evening.  I usually watch a spot of TV or read a book.  Myrna likes to curl up in the exact center of my bed.  And Lucy, for some reason, likes to curl up in the chair in front of my computer.

In other news…

I actually did spend a few hours during my vacation to read another chapter in our Records and Information Management (RIM) textbook.  We’ve progressed to the chapters on “Other Records Related Functions”.  Like forms, mail operations and copiers and copy centers.  In other words, other menial labor the responsibility for which may be dumped in the Records Manager’s lap so you’d better know a little something about it.

I actually know a woman, though I haven’t seen her in some years, who was hired by a well-know office services company (we won’t mention any names) as a Records Manager.  The service company sent her to a law firm in downtown Oakland.  (We used to have monthly ARMA board meetings in their conference room.)

When she reported for duty, the law firm informed her that, as Records Manager, she would be responsible for the file rooms, the mail rooms, the supply rooms, and the copy centers and all the copiers.  That’s what the services company had told them she could do.  Basically they hired one person to do a two-person job.

She was not happy about it.  So the ARMA network found her a new job somewhere else.  That’s one of the reasons for belonging to ARMA.

It’s either that, or find yourself a fairy godmother.

“Jeannie” comes home this Easter Sunday.  Can’t wait.

Love, as always,

Pete
