Dear Everyone:
During last week’s CRM (Certified Records Manager) Study Group meeting, our group leader had to leave early for another meeting. No sooner was she out the door than we decided that we needed to take a big step backward and catch our collective breath.
During the Holidays, so many people were away that our leader assigned extra reading in place of meetings. Some of us had so much actual work to do that they couldn’t keep up with the “homework”. And the next couple of chapters in the book goes off in another direction (forms and mail management).
So we had one of the group notify our leader of a sort of “palace revolt”: That we would do no more reading before next week’s meeting. (Except, of course, for those of us who haven’t finished the assigned reading from last time.) And that we decided to forego the previous practice of each of us writing up how we would handle one of the case problems in favor of approaching one of the problems as a group at the next meeting.
After all, there are only two more sections left in the book: Part 5, Related Records Management Functions (4 chapters); Part 6, Inactive Records Management (3 chapters). Then it’s back to the more general Management textbook and documenting my education and experience, which is why I now have copies of all my evaluations going back to 1973.
In other news…
The managers in “Boring & Really Expensive Services” (BRES), having changed their minds again about the new file structure that they’re all going to be using in the electronic document management system (EDMS), have now decided that this is the really, really final version. So tomorrow, a couple of us are going to try and map the current contents of their many cabinets into the new file structure in the one new “Super Cabinet”.
My car needs some routine maintenance done, so it turns out that we will work in “Livermore”. I can take my car to the dealer, then call one of the “Livermore” people to come and pick me up. For the rest of the day, we’ll be on a “retreat” where we can’t be interrupted and can concentrate on doing just one thing at a time.
Which would be a refreshing change, except for the two or three other “small” projects I’m bringing with me.
In the meantime…
Have I mentioned the merger?
Some months ago, the company acquired another “snafu” company.
That company had a
In another case, their procedure documents for handling Sarbanes-Oxley records (SOX) will be transferred into a Records Control Tracking System. However, one site said they didn’t want anything moved to a company site. They just wanted all their records copied to a CD and then deleted from “myCompany”.
This is where I come in. My part of the project is to make sure no records are destroyed before they should be. Also to make sure no records are retained longer than they should be. I’m the Information Management (IM) expert for this project. And, as more and more of these groups decide to migrate into our EDMS, I’ll be helping to handle the migration, including providing training where needed.
Which means I’m going to be getting progressively busier and busier with that. So I’m also beginning to “mentor” one of our specialists to take over the more administrative parts of training the new EDMS users, while also working with someone from the Electronic Project Management Office (EPMO) to take over the training itself.
And so on, and so on, and so on…
Love, as always,
Pete
