The Weekly Letters, by A. Pedersen Wood

October 20, 2005

Dear Everyone:

Earlier in the year, the Powers That Be (PTB) decided that those of us working in Information Management (IM) should be removed from “Boring & Really Expensive Services” (BRES) and placed in the Information Technology Company (ITC).  In the meantime, BRES was renovating Building V in Company Park.  Building V was to be the “flagship” of the new Space Standards for the Company.

Last March, we all moved into Building V, into eight foot by eight foot cubicles.  We had state-of-the-art wireless headsets for the telephones and marvelous desks that changed height at the press of a button.  And you could reach into your closet without getting out of your chair.

Then, in May, IM moved from BRES to ITC.  However, we were still in our fine cubicles in Building V.  Ever since then, BRES has been eager to “find” somewhere else (anywhere else) for IM to be.  It seems no longer being part of BRES, we shouldn’t be taking up space in the BRES building.  Behind the scenes (but not far enough from the rumor mill) various suggestions were made to relocate us.

One possibility was to send some of the group to “temporary” quarters in “Pleasant Hill” while housing the rest in the Records Center in “Livermore”.  This option was politely declined.  Eventually, they managed to find a group in the Park who did not object to being moved to “Pleasant Hill”.  Now we are being moved to their previous space in Building K.

Company Park is in the shape of a large square.  Building A is at the center of the bottom side of the square.  The building letter-designations progress counter-clockwise.  So Building B is to the right of Building A.  Building C is at the lower right corner of the square.  Buildings D, E and F form the right side of the square, with F at the corner.  Then Buildings G, H and K form the top side.  Building J is across the street from G and H.  It’s the dock where deliveries are made and where the main mail distribution and copy center are located.

Building K is at the top left corner of the square.  The last side is made up of Buildings L and T, with T at the corner; and Building V completes the bottom of the square to the left of A.

Building W is completely outside the square and is sort of catty-corner from B and C.  This is because the construction company that originally contracted to build the Park forgot they were supposed to build one building and it had to be lettered after all the others, including many that weren’t started yet.  I am given to understand that the construction company had to “eat” the cost for W because they included it in their original bid, but forgot to include it in the cost estimate agreed to in the contract.  Oops.

You may have noticed that certain letters are missing.  Where’s M, N, O, P, Q, R and S?  The Park was originally planned to be much bigger, more of a figure-eight than a square.  But then somebody started a cost-reduction campaign and the number of buildings sort of dropped.  Eventually, the Company sold the land that hadn’t been used yet to a development company.  The development company promptly built a business park and now Company is leasing space in the one of the buildings that didn’t become M, N, O, P, etc.

Everybody still with me?  So we’re effectively moving to the other side of the Park from where we are now.  That means longer walks to the cafeteria, which is in A, but the Company is big on walking right now, so that’s OK.  I don’t mind walking as long as it’s on Company time.

So I spent most of today packing for the move.  From my “cozy” cubicle, I’ve filled eight boxes, so far.  Plus one box I never unpacked from the last move.  It contains books that belong to the Mt Diablo Chapter of ARMA.  It’s the Chapter “library”, which has nowhere to go.

Tomorrow I’ll finish packing.  Then, because we’re just moving across the quad, I’ll take some things that I’d rather not let the movers handle over to the new digs.  Most of us will be in two-person rooms.  My room will also house the file cabinets that will be used for supplies and files for various Projects.  So I’ll have a room of my own, but with a lot of in-and-out traffic.

We have to be out of our cubicles by 3:00 tomorrow afternoon.  Then the technicians will come in and start disconnecting computers and phones and taking them to their new locations.  The movers will follow after most people have gone home for the weekend.  On Monday morning, we show up at our new offices and start to unpack.

And Tuesday I go on vacation.  Just taking a few days for myself.  So no Letter next week.

The following week:  Be prepared to hear about the parking situation.  J

Love, as always,

Pete
