The Weekly Letters, by A. Pedersen Wood

Dear Everyone:

It’s been over two weeks since I caught my post-Christmas cold and I realized this morning that I’m actually feeling pretty good.  Nose has finally dried up.  No longer hacking like a consumptive seal.  Things are looking up.

I understand that “Marshall” as well as “Jeannie” also came down with a cold at the same time.  Since we used different airlines, I’m assuming that we picked it up going through the Portland airport.  Most importantly, Mother didn’t get it.

In other news…

Things are picking up at work after a post-Holidays slump.  It took a little time to get back up to speed, but things are clipping along nicely now.  I just got handed a project to figure out a way to review hundreds of thousands of electronic drawings, building-type drawings, so that people will be able to find the one they need when they need it.  It could be interesting.

But enough about that.  I did manage to take in a movie last month, before the cold got worse enough to keep me down.  (This cold, oddly, started out very mild, then got progressively worse each day for over a week.)  So one day, while I was still on vacation, I sauntered on over to the local cinema and took in Lord of the Rings 3… hours and 35 minutes.

If nothing else, this trilogy (unlike something like The Matrix) is a true epic, and a very remarkable achievement.  It might even garner the producers a special Oscar similar to the one they gave Walt Disney the first time he produced a feature-length animated film.  (It was Snow White, and little Shirley Temple presented Disney with a full-size Oscar and seven little ones.)

As for the movie itself, it’s really long, jammed with details and magnificent special effects.  I hereby predict that it will win the Academy Award for best sound effects, if nothing else.  The Fellowship of the Ring, which formed in the first movie, have been separated.  But taking it on faith that the Hobbits, Frodo and Sam, will get to the magic mountain in time, the warriors start their battle and then everybody gets into the act.  Loads of fun, but much too long for anyone not a true believer.

And, for the record, I do not want a complete boxed set of the DVD’s when they come out.

On the other hand, Calendar Girls is warm, whimsical and charming.  Chris and Annie are the cutups in their Yorkshire chapter of the WI.  WI stands for “Women’s Institute”, dedicated to “educating and empowering women”.  The local chapter meets regularly and listens attentively to anyone they can rope into giving a talk, even if it’s an hour on the advantages of broccoli.  In other words, it’s a lot like ARMA, without the records management part.

When a person in their circle passes away, Chris decides the best way to honor their memory is with a new sofa for the “relative’s room” in the local hospital.  Their chapter of the WI will produce and sell calendars.  Usually, these calendars have themes like “best views”, “best churches”.  Chris would like George Clooney.

But then she sees a typical pin-up calendar in a mechanics garage and has a brainstorm.  The proper matrons of the Yorkshire WI will pose nude for the calendar.  After that, things really take off.  No pun intended.

Loads of fun in the very best of taste.  Try it, you’ll like it.

Love, as always,

Pete
