The Weekly Letters, by A. Pedersen Wood

April 23, 2003

Dear Everyone:

I’m told, for the record, that today is William Shakespeare’s birthday.  Happy Birthday, Will.

Tomorrow night is ARMA Night, so that makes tonight Letter Night.  Luckily, Homeowners Association Board Night was last week instead of this week.  Nevertheless, it’s been a very busy week.

On Sunday, I got a phone message informing me that I was scheduled to get my new dishwasher installed the next day (Monday) between 12:00 and 2:00.  Since I didn’t have any meetings planned for that day, I decided to take it as a Vacation day.  (One down, 29 to go.)  This gave me some much needed time to get the kitchen cleaned up.

Once he started removing the old dishwasher, the installer told me my timing was just right.  The thing literally fell apart as he was pulling it out from under the counter.  While the installer worked on the dishwasher, I plowed through the mountain of junk mail that had accumulated on the dining table (also known as horizontal storage space).

Announcement of a sale next week.  Announcement of a sale last week.  Announcement of a sale two weeks ago.  Announcement of a sale two months ago.  Pre-approved credit card applications by the yard.  I filled the recycle box and overfed the shredder.

Once my beautiful new dishwasher was installed (it still has that new car smell!), I headed up to my office in “Pleasant Hill”.  I had originally planned to spend Monday getting ready for a full-day training session on Tuesday and to prepare training materials for some half-day sessions for a special group.  The latter could wait until today, but I had to have the materials for Tuesday’s session, which would take place in “Pleasanton”.  It also gave me a chance to try out the new folding cart that I had purchased for the purpose of transporting boxes of training materials from my car to the training room.  It works beautifully, although I still have to make at least two trips from and to the car to move everything.  But it’s a lot easier to pull a cart than to carry heavy boxes.

The only downside to taking a Vacation day is all the email waiting for you when you get back.  Also, you can’t do email and do training at the same time, so I really didn’t get into my email until this morning.  Talk about information overload.  The only reason there were less than a hundred new messages is that several of the document management project team members are on vacation themselves this week.  (Spring Break:  Their kids are out of school.)

Document management system training continues to be the biggest thing on my plate.  Tomorrow, the only day I’ll actually be working in my office, I’ll be trying out the new materials on a woman who is so desperate to start using the system that she’s agreed to be my guinea pig.

Speaking of plates, now that I have my beautiful new dishwasher (with that new car smell!), “Jeannie” thinks it’s high time I got some new glasses.  The ones I have don’t look clean even when you know they are because of the “scuff marks” from being in the dishwasher.  “Jeannie” also insists that she may have seen some of my dishes in an antique store.  They’re not antiques!  They’re barely 20 to 30 years old!  Plus, they were originally guaranteed not to break.

So one of these days, I’ll pick out some new glasses and place settings.  The old dishes can go to charity, along with the window treatments (drapes and rods) that now don’t go with the beautiful new shutters.  No one will take the old glasses, so they’ll go into the recycle bin.

Next up on the home improvement agenda:  A new kitchen sink to go with the new dishwasher.

In other news…

“Jeannie’s” computer continues to refuse to let us install the software for the new printer.  I logged onto the printer company’s support site and filled out a form complete with everything we’ve tried and what I think the problem may be.  I got back a standard “We’re so sorry, please provide the answers to these questions…” making it obvious that no one had actually read anything I wrote.

However, “Jeannie’s” comment that “Case KATalyst”, the software that she uses on that machine, had her disable a lot of Windows features in order to use the software, suggests that we just need to figure out what got disabled.  I think I may have an idea of where to look.  We’ll try it again next weekend.

Keep a good thought.

Love, as always,

Pete
