The Weekly Letters, by A. Pedersen Wood

December 11, 1997

Dear Everyone:

Last week, it rained.  And it rained.  And then, it rained some more.  On Saturday, it rained so hard that the roof over the carport overflowed.  It was like driving through a car wash when I pulled out to do the weekly shopping.  And trying to get bags of groceries into the trunk without getting drenched myself was no fun either.

My bird feeder, which I had left sitting on top of something on the patio has sprouted.  It looks like a chia pet, long-haired variety.  “Jeannie” says it makes a statement and I should leave it that way.

Luckily, the rains have stopped for now.  And the cold that I woke up with last Monday was gone by the following Monday.  I cannot attribute this miraculous recovery to the flu shot I got last October.  “Jeannie” also woke up with a cold the same day I did and got over it just as quickly, as have some other people; so it’s just a fly-by-night cold that’s going around.  I have returned to my custom of leaving the furnace turned off at night, even though the temperature is a shade below 60o in the living room come morning.

“Jeannie” and I now have a new hairdresser in a new salon in Walnut Creek.  Our previous hairdresser moved to Greece for a few months to rest her wrists and back.  And we were displeased with the salon for reasons you don’t even want to know about.  The new place is very nice and is almost exactly halfway between the two of us.  I drive about 10 miles and “Jeannie” does about eight.  We meet there every four weeks for the traditional “C&C” (color and cut).  Then we do lunch.

We got our hair done this Saturday, so there wasn’t enough time left in the weekend for a movie.  Besides, we didn’t see anything interesting in the listings.  I guess we’re waiting for Titanic.  Can’t wait to see how they’ve changed the ending.

With no movie, I used the extra time on Sunday to make up a huge batch of chicken bisque for the freezer.  This is a thick chicken soup which, when defrosted and reheated, can be served over a bed of rice as chicken ala king.  Finally, after over a month, there is something in my freezer that is more nutritious than Dove Bars and/or hazelnut coffee (a gift, obviously).

In other news...

The Ashland tickets have arrived.  Even ordering as early as I did, we still didn’t get all our seats in the same row for some plays.  In some cases, they gave us a block of seats with a few seats in the next row back.  Since this sometimes made the price of the tickets lower, I will have to put together a spreadsheet to see who should get which seats.  (I’m thinking someone like “Jeannie” might prefer the cheaper tickets.)  I had charged the tickets to my credit card in order to fax the order in.  So there’s about $1200 sitting on my account right now.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been getting little refund checks from various utilities due to my closing accounts in Concord and starting new accounts in San Ramon.  For example, Pacific Bell sent me a check for $4.75 that had been “overcharged” on my phone bill in Concord.  And the cable company just couldn’t sleep nights until it refunded the $3.16 that I had overpaid.

So when I saw an envelope from my old mortgage company, I figured, “Oh, boy!  Another $7.26 check.”  Instead, it was for over $1400.  This little windfall will nicely cover the credit card.  However, I would still like people to pay me back as soon as they get the “bill” for their tickets.  Mother has even gone to the length of sending me a blank check.

Finally, the attached really, truly, started out on the Records Management Listserve, an electronic bulletin board for records managers.  Sometimes someone will put something funny out and that will kick off a new “thread” as it reminds people of another one and “that reminds me of the time...”  As someone who does go to the movies, I can attest to the accuracy of this list.

Love, as always,

Pete
