Dear Everyone:
So far, everything seems to be coming together like
a well-planned train wreck.
We finally heard back from the missing seller on the San Ramon place.
He was at
Disney World. The two
sellers came back with a counter-offer that I decided I could live with,
especially in light of the three places in
Pleasanton
that we looked at last Saturday.
Since I had Monday as a vacation day, the real estate agent in
Pleasanton faxed the
agreement to my Concord
Realtor’s
office so I could sign it without having to drive all the way down to
Pleasanton. Great invention,
fax machines, terrific time savers.
I’ve taken to carrying all the papers from two real
estate offices and the finance company with me at all times.
So when the loan officer reminded me that I still had to sign the
application, I was able to say, “I have it right here.
I’ll drop it off at your office on the way home.”
We just locked in an
interest rate
at below 7%, 30-year-fixed.
Yesterday, I left work at 11:51 to meet the Realtor
at 12:00 at the townhouse to do the home inspection.
There had been a cancellation and the inspector was available in
spite of the short notice.
And I got a $30 discount for paying by check on the spot.
So far, I’ve been pretty lucky in all this (knock
on wood). Also, the
inspector reported that there was very little fixing up needed, which
will make the sellers happy.
The
escrow on my
Concord
place closes on October 29.
The buyer is letting me take until November 1 to vacate, without
charging any rent, which is very nice of her.
The escrow on the
San Ramon
place will close on October 30, when I will start moving small things in
(more vacation days). And I
have movers already scheduled for the 31st.
Still need to call the phone company, the power
company, the cable companies, etc., etc., etc...
But so far, things are looking good.
OK, movies...
After the disappointing three places we looked at
on Saturday, “Jeannie” and I went to see
The Peacemaker,
starring George
Clooney and
Nicole Kidman. This was
definitely not disappointing.
Bad guy Russians steal some
nuclear arms
that were going to be destroyed anyway, with the intention of selling
them for a tidy profit.
(When are we going to see some good guy Russians?)
Clooney has to locate and retrieve said nuclear arms, with
assistance from the lovely Ms. Kidman (who, for once, gets to wear her
own hair).
The story is intelligent, with reasonable
motivations for nearly everything, ranging from good old-fashioned greed
to good old-fashioned grief.
The possible exception might be a point where Clooney gets a little
over-excited with a roll of duct tape, looking a bit like a demented
MacGyver.
And the ending, of course.
But a thriller involving nuclear arms has to have a bang at the
ending, doesn’t it? Worth
the matinee price.
Love, as always,
Pete
