Love, As Always, Pete

The Weekly Letters, by A. Pedersen Wood

Dear Everyone:

First, and foremost, congratulations to “Alice” and “Kelly” on the new addition to their family, and welcome to little “Park” who made her debut last Saturday at 3:00 am, 7 lbs 3 oz, 19”.  Those who are familiar with our favorite park in Ashland will have no trouble identifying where the name came from.

As for me, I'm still trying to figure out just what it is that “Mahitabel” does all day.  So far, I've spent a total of three days with her and I remain in a kind of fog.  “Mahitabel's” approach to training can best be described as mercurial (i.e., "jumps all over the place").

She keeps telling me that this or that is something I won't be doing.  This pertains mostly to the more physical aspects of the care and feeding of PCs.  In this, she's right; the idea is that if the PC needs more than the most cursory first aid, I call in a specialist and go back to my more analytical duties.

Of course, I get even with her.  When she asks to learn my job, I assure her that working with RACS Customers is something I never have time for, being too busy doing system stuff.

More recently, we tried a new tack, going through one specific software, of which I will be the (surprise!) administrator.  Only this time, I drove and “Mahitabel” navigated.  Which is to say, I handled the keyboard, with “Mahitabel” giving instructions rather than showing me what to do.  “Mahitabel” readily agreed to this approach, repeatedly slapping her own hand away from the keys.

It wasn't her fault that we kept being interrupted with questions either for her or for me.  I could easily spend an entire day answering Paradox questions alone.  That's because I know more about Paradox than anyone else in the three groups (Forms, RACS and “Livermore”).  What I don't know is LAN administration.

And in just two more weeks, I'm going to be running at three (3!!!) of them.  Katie bar the door.

I'm going to be busy in the next few months.  Like a true Pisces, symbolized by two fishes, one swimming upstream, one swimming downstream, I won't know if I'm coming or going.  I already have one of those personal recorders to capture ideas before I can forget them again.  Next, I might have to get a beeper.  More new technology to learn.

But, hey!  If I can program a VCR, I guess I can handle anything, right?  So what if I drop a few people out of the system.  I can always put them back in again, can't I?  Once I learned how to, right?

Tally ho!

Love, as always,

Pete
