Love, As Always, Pete

The Weekly Letters, by A. Pedersen Wood

April 4, 1991

Dear Everyone:

While “Jeannie” and I were cavorting about in Monterey, my office moved from the 13th Floor to the 30th.  Among other things, this involves a change from the local elevators to the express which jumps from 3 to 21 without stopping.  The local elevators only go as high as 21.  I read somewhere (probably in Discover) that the technology exists to make buildings over a mile high, but they’ don’t.  The reason:  It takes contemporary elevators too long to go a mile.  Faster elevators are possible, but tests indicate that people don’t like going over 30 mph straight up.

“Alma” arranged the week before the move for each of us to get 10 large moving boxes (more, if needed) and a double-sided book cart for books, binders, software packages and large objects.  We held a special staff meeting to go over everyone’s responsibilities.  Each person was responsible for packing up the loose items in his/her desk; file cabinets over 3 drawers high, empty the top drawers, etc.

“Ashley”, being the PC Coordinator, pointed out that, since there was always the slightest possibility of the movers dropping one of the PC’s on its head, we should back up the systems before the move.  Since I’m the “assistant” PC Coordinator, that meant that I would be doing the backing up.  “Alma” reminded “Ashley” the PC’s should have their heads “parked” before moving them.

This became my assignment:  Back ‘em up and park their heads.

Sounds dubious, no matter what the context.  (Kids, don’t try this at home!)  Actually, what with packing up my own stuff, backing up the PC’s and leaving on time to go get the Van, I never did get any heads “parked”.  “Ashley” had to do it.  Later, when I asked him how to park the heads on “Clara’s” PC, he told me that the newer PC’s are “self-parking”.

What a concept!  I understand one of the major auto manufacturers is trying to come up with a “self-parking” car.  More power to them.

When I arrived in my new office, I found that “Alma” had done some wheeling and dealing.  In place of the old 2-drawer file cabinet, I had a larger, wider 3-drawer cabinet.  Which I promptly filled to capacity.  I also got a new bookcase, which I promptly filled to capacity.

I have my own closet, where I can hang my jacket and forget where I put it.

I have my own window, with my own view of… a blank wall, actually.  I’m directly across from the top two floors of 595 MMM.  But, if I feel the need for a view, I can go into the Conference Room from which you can see  Hayward.  I’m not certain exactly why you’d want to see Hayward, but if you did, it’s there.

Knowing that I would be getting my own office, “Jeannie” and I stopped at our favorite antique place a few weeks ago and picked out a nice, English oak cupboard/washstand.  We brought it into the City on Sunday and set it up next to the file cabinet.  It has a wide drawer and a 2-door cupboard underneath.

Which I promptly filled to capacity.  We moved in on Monday.  On Tuesday, I told “Alma” I needed a bigger office.  Fortunately, she took it as a joke.

Love, as always,

Pete
